Permethrin is the workhorse type-I pyrethroid of the public-health and veterinary segments. Commercial grades run 94% and 95% minimum active. The impurities to ask for on a five-batch analysis are residual 3-phenoxybenzyl alcohol, the corresponding aldehyde, and chrysanthemic acid derivatives. Colour is a practical proxy: a clean lot is pale yellow and pourable at 25 °C, while a dark amber viscous lot signals oxidised feedstock and will create odour problems in an aerosol can.

Formulation fit

Permethrin feeds EC 100 g/L to 500 g/L for agricultural and veterinary use, WP 25% for indoor residual spraying, and aerosol concentrates typically at 0.1–0.5% active with a PBO synergist at a 1:5 to 1:10 active:PBO ratio. For flushing and knock-down in combination products it is commonly paired with prallethrin or imiprothrin, and with cyphenothrin where longer residual kill is required.

Against newer pyrethroids, permethrin's advantages are cost per treated square metre, a long-established regulatory dossier in most non-EU markets, and unmatched breadth of registered uses spanning household, veterinary, public-health and some agricultural labels.
