Permethrin Technical Material: 2026 Supplier Guide, Cis/Trans Ratios and Price Basis

Permethrin is the workhorse type-I pyrethroid of the public-health and veterinary segments. It sits behind household aerosols, mosquito coils, insecticide-treated nets, cattle pour-ons and residual barrier sprays — and unlike most pyrethroids, the buying decision is not only about purity. It is about the cis/trans isomer ratio.

Cis/trans ratio — the specification that decides your product

Permethrin TC is traded in two dominant ratios. 25/75 cis:trans is the higher-vapour, faster knock-down grade favoured for household aerosols, coils and space sprays. 40/60 cis:trans carries stronger residual activity and lower volatility, which is what residual barrier treatments, treated nets and veterinary pour-ons need. Buying 25/75 for a residual application produces a product that tests well on day one and fails at week three. Always specify the ratio on the purchase order, not just the assay.

Purity and impurity profile

Commercial grades run 94% and 95% minimum active. The impurities to ask for on a five-batch analysis are residual 3-phenoxybenzyl alcohol, the corresponding aldehyde, and chrysanthemic acid derivatives. Colour is a practical proxy: a clean lot is pale yellow and pourable at 25 °C, while a dark amber viscous lot signals oxidised feedstock and will create odour problems in an aerosol can.

Formulation fit

Permethrin feeds EC 100 g/L to 500 g/L for agricultural and veterinary use, WP 25% for indoor residual spraying, and aerosol concentrates typically at 0.1–0.5% active with a PBO synergist at a 1:5 to 1:10 active:PBO ratio. For flushing and knock-down in combination products it is commonly paired with prallethrin or imiprothrin, and with cyphenothrin where longer residual kill is required.

Where permethrin still wins

Against newer pyrethroids, permethrin's advantages are cost per treated square metre, a long-established regulatory dossier in most non-EU markets, and unmatched breadth of registered uses spanning household, veterinary, public-health and some agricultural labels. Q3 2026 ex-China FOB pricing for permethrin 94% TC sits at USD 13–15/kg, with 95% at USD 14–16/kg; 40/60 ratio material typically carries a USD 0.5–1.0/kg premium over 25/75 on the same assay. CIF Istanbul or Mersin adds USD 1.0–1.6/kg on FCL volumes. Material ships in 200 L HDPE drums or 1000 L IBCs; a 20 FCL loads 16–18 MT in drum format.
